Exploring the Elements of Design

Image
Composition - composition is putting things together. These windows are arranged together with same shapes and colors. Contrast - White boards are the examples of contrast where two colors, white and gray are strategically used to create visual interest.  Balance - The black tiles represent balance of visual weights of color, shape, and texture. Emphasis- The only printer on the desk with a lot of computers suggests emphasis with drawing viewer's eye to it. Proportion - The clock with the surface behind it shows proportion where the clock  fits naturally within the frame, demonstrating correct size relationships.  Pat tern -  This drawing of a book shelf repeats similar shapes or sections in an organised way. The repetition creates a recognisable pattern.  Rhythm -  The rhythm drawing of same desks uses repeated shapes spaced evenly, creating a sense of movement. The eye flows from one shape to the next, similar to a visual beat or rhythm. Unity - ...

Repetition

Image
Repetition  The artwork above demonstrates the use of Repetition in design. Repetition is the intentional reuse of elements like shape, size, color, texture, direction, position, space and gravity. In simple word, if we use the same form more than once in a design, we use it in repetition. This artwork has been o rganized within a 4x3 grid structure, outlined by a thick dark border.  Each of the nine squares contains a different abstract pattern or element.  Six  squares feature large circles with various shading and internal lines.  Four squares are filled with intersection of straight black lines. Other two of them feature abstract shapes  solid black background .  However, e...

Interrelationship of Forms

Image
Detachment In Detachment  forms remain separate from each other although they may be very close together. This artwork  shows detachment through the physical separation of one object from the others.  A single, vertical block is shown floating in the air, completely separated from the two rows of horizontal blocks below it.  There are no lines, shadows, or other visual cues connecting the top block to the others.  Other eleven small boxes also are separated from each other. Shadows were used in all boxes to show them separated from each other. The artwork was very easy to draw and I didn't feel any difficulties.                                                          Touching  Touching is when   we move the two forms closer, they begin to touch. The continuo...

Metropolitan Museum of Art Field Trip

Image
Two of artworks that I saw on MET museum field trip are Terracotta Lekythos and Offering Bearer .  The Terracotta Lekythos is an ancient Greek vessel used for storing oil, often placed in tombs as offerings to the dead. It is made from terracotta, a type of fired clay that was widely used in Greek pottery. The artists shaped the vase on a potter’s wheel, then painted it with a fine slip that turned black when fired in a kiln under specific conditions. This process is part of the “black-figure” technique common in Greek pottery. This process involved painting the background black and leaving the figures in the natural red-orange color of the clay. In class, we’ve explored how art elements of design, this vase reflects the curved outlines of the decorative patterns around the neck and base create rhythm and movement of line .   Shape and plane  appear in how the flat painted figures are arranged on the rounded surfaces of the vase, giving the illusion of depth on a curved...

Figure Ground Cutouts

Image
Reflection of Artwork: Figure Ground is a principle in design and art where the main subjects is separated form its surroundings.  .  Contrasting colors  are a key tool for creating this relationship. Size, shape, and focus are also used to ensure the figure is clearly distinguishable from the ground.  The picture represents the idea of Figure Ground relationship.  The design is created by cutting shapes from a central blue square and then flipping them to the outside.  The relationship is further complicated by the four irregular, organic shapes cut out from the blue figure.  These cutouts create a secondary figure-ground, where the dark background color now appears as a figure within the blue shape, creating a sense of visual tension.  This creates a balanced composition where the positive space and the negative space  are equally important.  The shapes that are cut out from the blue square become the figure, while the remainin...

Point Line Plane

Image
POINT This drawing represents point . Point has been used in this drawing to create visual interest and create a sense of movement. These points are arranged in four clusters, which shows collections of points positioned together which decreasing by size. This creates a sense of movement from big to tiny points. The use of density gives the illusion of form and texture. Larger dots create a sense of mass while scattering smaller dots create sense lighter quality. The arrangements of circular points in pattern suggest a feeling of flaw .                                           LINE  This drawing represents line . Lines are drawn as curved, irregular, and handrawn. These lines  create the illusion of 3D volume and form.  The direction, thickness, and curvature of lines create motion within the artwork.  Repetitive use of lines build  patterns and suggest ...
